It's Exam Season! Here's How to Ace Your Grades While Keeping up with Your Part-Time Job

Balancing regular classes with a part-time job definitely isn’t easy. But during exam season, things get switched to hard mode.

When you have expectations from both your employer and your prof to balance, things can get stressful. The last thing you want to do is burn out, but how can you pack all those extra responsibilities into your usual 24 hour days?

It all really boils down to time management, communication, and a little thinking outside the box! We’ve put together a few starting points so you can ace those exams and keep up your commitment to your work family!

Be realistic about your workload

The most important thing to remember when tackling a challenging period like this is to know your limits. You’re not a superhero, and if you take on too much, you’ll find yourself frustrated when you can’t meet all your commitments. This might mean cutting back on some social commitments for a few weeks or reducing volunteer hours temporarily.

Make a plan

Creating a study and work schedule for the next few weeks can help you visualize what your life is going to look like. Your brain is going to be slammed with notes and flashcards, so there’s no sense in taking up extra space in your brain trying to remember upcoming dates and shifts!

Get inventive with your studies

Buckling down with a textbook isn’t the only way to get things done. If you find yourself constantly on the go, try recording your notes into an audio file or carry flashcards with you. This can help you maximize downtime and turn it into study time!

Don’t just depend on coffee

Coffee can help you stay awake, but it also comes with mid-day energy crashes. Eating the right foods can help you focus and fueled all day long. Try brain-boosting foods (fish, walnuts, coconut oil, etc.) and energy-boosting foods (oatmeal, nuts, bananas, etc.)!

Take breaks!

Everyone runs out of steam at some point. Don’t just power through it — schedule regular breaks and time for power naps. Staying well-rested will help you absorb and retain information, which will definitely be a plus when it comes time to write your tests!

Keep everyone in the loop

Your employers and study partners can’t support you if they don’t know what’s going on. Make sure everyone is in the loop regarding your schedule and what’s on your plate. Planning ahead is important, but it’s also important to have people in your court to help you in case an emergency comes up!
